Iran announced that it intends to generate billions of dollars by levying fees on vessels for security, safety and environmental services in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran says the scheme could bring in up to $40 billion a year and wants neighboring Gulf states to share in the revenue. The United States, Oman and other Gulf countries oppose any transit charges, arguing that international waterways should remain free of fees.
