The British Ministry of Defence announced under its Defence Investment Programme that the Wildcat AH1 reconnaissance and multi‑role helicopters, which entered service in 2014, will be retired from 2027. Their duties will be transferred to unmanned systems, despite no clear replacement being identified for roles such as light transport, troop movement and combat search and rescue, and concerns that the 847 Naval Air Squadron could be disbanded.
The decision comes amid broader questions about defence spending, with the UK’s GDP at $3.2 trillion while the armed forces struggle to maintain existing helicopter fleets.
