Despite the Apache attack helicopter replacing the Cobra in the U.S. Army during the 1980s, the U.S. Marine Corps has decided to remain loyal to the Cobra family. The decision is driven by the Cobra's better suitability for maritime operations, lighter weight for shipboard deployment, lower maintenance costs and extensive parts commonality with Huey helicopters, which reduces logistical burdens at sea.
While the Apache was designed primarily for tank hunting and heavy ground combat in Europe, Marine missions focus on close infantry support, escorting transport helicopters and amphibious operations—roles the Cobra fulfills. Consequently, the Marines have upgraded their fleet with the AH‑1W Super Cobra followed by the advanced AH‑1Z Viper, now considered one of the world’s most capable attack helicopters.
