Ukraine has taken the first step toward purchasing about 100 Patriot air‑defence missiles worth roughly $1 billion, financed through a European Union loan. The Ministry of Defence also formally requested the transfer of Patriot missiles from the stockpiles of nearly 40 partner countries to bridge the current shortfall until new deliveries arrive.
The move follows one of Russia’s largest attacks on Kyiv, during which nearly 500 drones and 77 missiles—including 25 ballistic and hypersonic—were launched, exposing the strain on Ukraine’s Patriot missile reserves. Kyiv has also signed a separate agreement, backed by Germany, to receive hundreds of PAC‑2 missiles, though those will be delivered over the coming years. In the meantime, Ukraine will continue to rely on missile transfers from allied nations.
