The Swedish defense company Saab has signed a contract to sell 16 Gripen E multi‑role fighters to Ukraine, valued at roughly $2.54 billion and including technical support. According to the plan, Sweden will first deliver 16 Gripen C/D aircraft from its inventory early in 2027, followed by the new Gripen E models beginning in 2029. The Gripen E is the most advanced version of the Swedish fighter, featuring AESA radar, advanced electronic warfare systems, a more powerful engine, and the ability to carry a wide range of air‑to‑air and air‑to‑ground weapons, including the long‑range Meteor missile. This deal is seen as a key element of Ukraine’s air force modernization and is expected to significantly boost the country’s combat capabilities in the coming years.
