On June 25, 1991, Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. The following day, the Yugoslav army clashed with Slovenian forces, igniting the brief but pivotal Ten‑Day War.

This short conflict marked the start of a decade‑long series of wars that spread to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, resulting in over 130,000 deaths and millions displaced.

The breakup of Yugoslavia permanently reshaped the Balkan political map, producing independent states such as Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
