The Indian Army announced a program to transform a portion of its aging T‑72 tanks into unmanned or remotely‑controlled armored vehicles. The initiative, part of the Ministry of Defence’s iDEX ADITI 4.0 innovation program, aims to preserve combat capability while reducing crew risk. Converted tanks will be fitted with autonomous driving systems, remote‑control interfaces, networked communications, and can operate with or without a crew. They are intended for high‑risk missions such as reconnaissance, minefield penetration, assault operations, deception tasks, and support of armored units. With about 2,500 T‑72s in service, India plans to convert some of them into ground‑robotic platforms rather than retire the entire fleet. If trials succeed, the vehicles will be deployed in manned‑unmanned teaming operations.
