The U.S. Army has granted Northrop Grumman a five‑year contract to produce the multi‑purpose 120mm M1147 AMP round for M1 Abrams tanks. The new ammunition combines the capabilities of four older projectile types into a single round and uses a programmable fuze that can detonate on impact, after a delay, or in the air. Northrop Grumman says the M1147 AMP will significantly boost the operational flexibility and firepower of Abrams tanks against a wide range of targets.
