On June 17, Russia launched construction of the ninth Yasen‑M nuclear submarine, named "Murmansk". The vessel is a multi‑purpose platform that will be fitted with the supersonic Zircon missile system.
At present four Yasen‑M submarines are in service with the Russian Navy, and the fifth, "Perm", is undergoing sea trials. The Murmansk is expected to be the first of its class to carry Zircon missiles.
The Yasen‑M class measures 130 m in length and has a submerged displacement of about 13,800 t. Powered by an OK‑650V reactor delivering 190 MW of thermal power, the submarines can reach 57 km/h underwater and dive to depths of 600 m.
Armament includes ten 533 mm torpedo tubes, up to 32 anti‑ship missiles such as Onyx or Zircon, or up to 40 Kalibr cruise missiles. The class is considered Russia’s most advanced attack submarine, designed for hunting surface ships, other submarines, and conducting long‑range land attacks.
