French-German defense firm KNDS presented the CAPINT tank at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition. Built on an upgraded Leopard 2A8 chassis and equipped with the French unmanned ASCALON turret, the prototype can mount a 120 mm gun now and a 140 mm gun in the future. CAPINT is intended to bridge the gap between France’s Leclerc tank and the delayed Franco‑German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) program, which is now unlikely to enter service before the 2040s. Meanwhile, Germany is pursuing its own replacements, including the Leopard 3 project and Rheinmetall’s KF51 Panther, adding further uncertainty to the joint MGCS effort.
