The HIMARS system has been upgraded to the new HIMARS FLEX configuration. The upgrade doubles the payload capacity for munitions such as the AML and adds the ability to carry up to eight Patriot PAC‑3 MSE interceptors, similar to the European‑American MEADS launchers. This makes the vehicle a highly mobile, flexible and lightweight rocket launcher capable of being transported by a C‑130 aircraft and, if needed, serving as a launcher for Patriot air‑defence munitions or operating under IFPC.
Unlike the AML version, the current upgrade retains the existing chassis while likely requiring reinforcement and modifications to accommodate the new launch system, which can carry two missile pods instead of one.
Quad‑mounted HIMARS units equipped with four pods and the new ammunition are detailed in the linked source.
