Legal custodian of the holy Imam Hussein shrine, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalaei, said that Ashura rituals should serve to build a cohesive Ashura-oriented community. He emphasized that the two core pillars of the Hussaini cause are heartfelt emotion—particularly mourning and tears—and conscious knowledge. Al-Karbalaei urged a precise balance between informed understanding and emotional expression to achieve the goals of the Hussaini movement, noting that the Ashura school should not be reduced to mere tragic sentiment.
