Bloomberg reports that the European SAMP/T NG air defence system, developed by the French‑Italian Eurosam consortium, is being positioned as a replacement for the US Patriot system. Kuwait and Hungary are negotiating purchases, while about 15 other countries, including Switzerland and Estonia, have shown interest. Demand is rising mainly because of the Patriot’s high cost and long delivery times. The European‑made system is designed to counter aircraft, cruise missiles and certain ballistic missiles, reflecting a move by some nations to reduce reliance on American defence equipment and strengthen Europe’s defence supply chain.
