China has solidified its dominance in the global automotive market, with May exports rising 68.7 percent year-over-year to approximately 930,000 units — roughly 1,100 percent higher than May 2019 levels. New electric vehicle exports jumped 112.6 percent to 424,000 units, accounting for 46 percent of total auto exports.

Over the 12 months ending in May, China set a record of 8.6 million vehicle exports, compared to Japan's 4.2 million — 51 percent less than China. The reversal is stark: in 2019, China exported just 1 million vehicles while Japan shipped 4.8 million, meaning Japan exported 380 percent more than China at that time.

China now leads the global automotive market without any serious competitor, according to the report.
