According to Israel Hayom, diplomatic sources say Washington covertly authorized Qatar to transfer funds to Tehran in exchange for freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and protection from Iranian attacks. The arrangement, aimed at easing global energy prices, was reportedly tolerated by the US Navy despite contradicting official policy.
The secret approval, granted about a month ago, is said to underpin a forthcoming memorandum of understanding with Iran. Qatar, concerned about possible Iranian retaliation after a strike on one of its gas facilities, pursued the financial deal to secure stability. Some payments were reportedly disguised as tanker passage fees, and a credit line of up to $1 billion was opened for goods purchases through Qatar.
