Data from MarineTraffic shows that most commercial vessels used the northern traffic separation scheme to pass through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours. Only a small number of ships chose the southern route, which traverses Omani waters and is backed by the United States. Because Automatic Identification System (AIS) reporting is voluntary, the actual number of passing vessels may be higher than the figures visible on the site.
