The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States and Oman are working to convince Iran to abandon its request for fees on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In talks held in Doha this week, U.S. officials offered to release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, including $6 billion held in Qatar, in exchange for dropping the toll demand. Iran has so far refused, insisting the fees could generate up to $40 billion a year. Oman has proposed creating a maritime services fund financed voluntarily by shipping and energy companies rather than mandatory charges, but Tehran rejected the idea because it does not include direct toll collection. Some U.S. officials also doubt the proposal, fearing it could be viewed as an indirect fee benefiting Iran.
