French defense firm KNDS has announced its new interim tank project, CAPINT (CAPacité INTérmédiaire), and released a video of its trials. The platform is intended to bridge the gap until the future European joint program MGCS becomes operational. CAPINT is built on a Leopard 2 chassis and mounts an unmanned ADT140 Ascalon turret. It is initially equipped with a 120 mm gun and 22 ready‑to‑fire rounds, with the option to upgrade to a 140 mm caliber. The crew sits in the front of the chassis to improve survivability. The design features open‑architecture systems, drone detection and targeting, cooperative drone (Loyal Wingman) control, advanced optical and acoustic systems, and reactive and active armor. A 30 mm gun and 12.7 mm machine gun are also planned for counter‑drone defense. Reports indicate the vehicle completed a moving‑fire test in early 2026. The choice of a Leopard 2 chassis reflects its continued mass production, while the production of the older Leclerc tank has been limited or halted.
