Saudi Arabia adopted the Heckler & Koch G3 assault rifle in 1968 and began producing it under license in the 1970s. In the early 2000s the army began phasing out the G3, introducing the G36 as its new standard weapon in 2008. However, the G3 remains in service with some units and reserve forces. In addition to the G36, Saudi forces also employ weapons such as the AUG, FN F2000, and AK‑103.
