Indonesia has officially announced that it will no longer participate in the joint production of the KF‑21 Boramae fighter jet, opting instead to purchase the aircraft directly from South Korea. The decision follows years of disputes over financial contributions, technology transfer, intellectual property rights, and industrial division. Indonesia’s share in the project has been cut from 1.6 trillion won to 600 billion won, and Seoul will provide less technology in return. While the fifth pre‑production sample and some development data will be transferred to Indonesia, no production or assembly lines will be established there.
The move coincides with Indonesia’s recent procurement decisions: it has finalised an order for 42 Rafale fighters, signed a contract for 48 KAAN aircraft from Turkey, and abandoned plans to purchase the F‑15EX. This shift marks a significant setback for the Seoul‑Jakarta defense partnership in the KF‑21 program.
