Pakistan is developing high‑energy laser (HEL) weapons to strengthen its air defense against suicide drones, swarm drones, and other unmanned systems. The current drone‑countermeasures strategy is layered: electronic warfare to jam communications and guidance, anti‑air artillery and possible drone‑seeking missiles for physical destruction, and directed‑energy weapons such as lasers as a new defensive layer. Since 2024, Pakistan has begun researching and testing laser systems aimed at more effectively neutralizing small drones, stray munitions, and saturation attacks. Experts say that successful deployment could significantly reduce the cost of drone defense and boost Pakistan’s air‑defensive capabilities against emerging threats.
