Employment in sectors most affected by artificial intelligence has fallen by an average of 11,000 jobs per month over the past three months. Those sectors include management consulting, graphic design, administrative work, call centers, computer system services, software publishing, and internet search services.
Since mid‑2023, net job growth in these areas has occurred in only two months. By contrast, at the peak of 2022, employment in these industries was rising by about 55,000 jobs per month.
According to data from the Challenger Gray Institute, employers blamed AI for 38,579 layoffs in May, the highest monthly figure recorded to date. This marks the third consecutive monthly increase, up from roughly 5,000 in February.
