The Mil‑28A attack helicopter features a millimetre‑wave N025 radar mounted on its main mast, allowing crews to monitor the battlefield without exposing the helicopter’s body. The 360‑degree radar can detect and track ground and air targets in all weather, day or night, and provides terrain mapping, weather alerts, obstacle detection and situational awareness. Radar data is fed to the helicopter’s optical targeting system to speed up target identification and engagement.
Mounting the radar on the mast gives a tactical advantage: the helicopter can remain concealed behind natural cover while still locating and locating enemy targets, significantly improving survivability.
The upgraded Mil‑28AIM version adds an X‑band capability to the existing Ka‑band, enabling more accurate air‑target tracking, better mapping, and an IFF (identification friend or foe) system for the crew.
