Israeli Jews are not a homogeneous group; they come from a variety of ethnic and geographic backgrounds.
Approximately 40–45 % of Israeli Jews trace their ancestry to Middle Eastern and North African countries such as Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Morocco. Around 30–35 % are descendants of Central and Eastern European Jews. Other segments of the population have roots in the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, North America, Latin America, and other parts of the world.
In recent decades, extensive migration and intermarriage among these groups have produced a significant number of Israelis with mixed heritage.
