New reports indicate the final count of radar‑stealth B-21 Raider bombers for the US Air Force could reach 200, surpassing the current total of all US bombers. The Air Force presently operates about 140 bombers, including 76 B-52s, roughly 45 B-1Bs and 19 B-2 Spirits, but Pentagon officials say the planned purchase of 100 B-21s will not meet future needs.
Defense Secretary Pete Hagel and senior military leaders have warned that the service will require "significantly more" B-21s. The US Strategic Command supports a fleet of 145 or more, and independent studies argue that 200 aircraft are essential to counter China in a prolonged conflict.
The B-21 is intended to replace both B-1B and B-2 bombers, handling conventional and nuclear missions. Experts contend that a 100‑aircraft fleet would be insufficient to cover simultaneous nuclear deterrence and large‑scale offensive operations.
