Japan's parliament approved changing the name of the country's Air Self-Defense Force to the "Japan Air and Space Self-Defense Force," effective April 1, 2027. The rename reflects an expanded mission that now covers space activities. In recent years Japan has invested heavily in space capabilities, establishing a Space Operations Unit responsible for monitoring the space environment, tracking orbital debris, developing satellite capabilities, and supporting military operations in space. Tokyo is also testing satellite guidance and communications technology for its long-range missiles to enhance deterrence against threats from China and North Korea.
