Lockheed Martin aims to conduct the inaugural flight test of its new AGM-158 XR (eXtreme Range) cruise missile by the end of 2026. While the official range has not been disclosed, analysts estimate it could reach 1,600–1,800 km, far exceeding the current JASSM‑ER’s roughly 980 km and potentially surpassing some Tomahawk variants. The XR will carry a 450‑kg penetrator warhead and feature a modular architecture that allows future payload and configuration options. It is designed for launch from F‑35, F‑15E, F/A‑18E/F Super Hornet fighters, as well as B‑1, B‑2 and B‑52 bombers, with integration planned for the upcoming B‑21 Raider. Additional launch concepts under study include ship‑based launchers, Mk‑41 VLS ground launchers, and cargo‑plane deployments under the Rapid Dragon program.
