The frigate Choe Hyon (hull number 51), the lead ship of its class, was formally commissioned into the North Korean navy at Nampho on the western coast in the presence of Kim Jong Un. Sea trials lasted 1 year and 2 months and included multiple weapons‑firing tests. The second vessel, Kang Kon (or Kang Gon) with hull number 52, is only a few months away from entering service. During the ceremony Kim Jong Un reiterated plans to produce two 10,000‑ton warships of this class each year for the next five years, as well as to develop logistic support vessels and related programs.
