Australia and Canada have signed a defence export deal under which Canada will purchase the Joint Over‑The‑Horizon Radar Network (JORN) from Australia for about $1.75 billion. The system can detect and track aerial and maritime targets up to 3,000 km using ionospheric reflections, bypassing the line‑of‑sight limits of conventional radars. Ottawa aims to build a new over‑the‑horizon radar network for Arctic and northern surveillance based on the Australian technology, adding to a previously allocated $6.5 billion programme. Australian firm BAE Systems will provide support and delivery is slated to begin in July 2026.
