The Kurdish branch of Al-Qaeda, known as the "Salah al-Din" units, which was previously based in tribal areas of Pakistan, has emerged in Iran's Kurdistan region. The group is threatening to advance toward the cities of Baneh, Saqez, Sardasht, Mahabad, and Sanandaj.
