India’s army selected the South Korean K9 Thunder self‑propelled howitzer over Russia’s 2S19M1 Msta‑S after a two‑year field trial. The Russian system performed poorly in hot weather and high‑altitude conditions, showing reduced engine power, mobility issues on steep slopes, and lower environmental compatibility. In contrast, the K9’s automatic engine management, superior mobility and adaptability to harsh conditions gave it an edge. South Korea also offered a customized version for India with enhanced ventilation, dust protection and indigenous communications equipment. The K9 fired 587 rounds and completed about 1,000 km of mobility testing. India has already ordered 200 K9 Vajra‑T units and is evaluating an additional 300, which would bring the total to over 500 howitzers.
