Reports indicate that since 2022 at least three Tu-22M3 strategic bombers have been lost in technical incidents in Russia's Irkutsk region, with a disputed accident in Stauropol in 2024 raising the total to four. Independent sources show another eight aircraft destroyed in various attacks and three more damaged. By comparison, only two Tu-22M3s were lost to technical failures between 2012 and 2022. If these figures are accurate, Russia may have lost over 70% of its operational Tu-22M3 fleet due to a combination of enemy action and aging equipment, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining Soviet-era aircraft.
