The U.S. Army has selected the 155mm guided projectile "Volcano GLR" for its Extended Range Artillery Program (ERAP). Developed by Italy's Leonardo and Germany's Diehl Defence, the round uses inertial and satellite guidance and can be equipped with laser or infrared seekers, offering a reported accuracy of less than five meters. Previously used by Ukraine, the shells can strike targets up to 70 km away. While Ukrainian forces have employed 155mm AHS Krab howitzers to achieve that range, the U.S. M109A7 39-caliber howitzer can reach about 55 km with the Volcano GLR, allowing the Army to extend the range of its existing artillery without a new system.
