General Atomics, together with Sweden’s Saab, has flown an MQ‑9 Reaper fitted with the LoyalEye airborne early‑warning radar for the first time. The system can detect and track aerial targets at long range and relay data to command centres or air‑defence networks. Unlike traditional AWACS platforms such as the E‑3 or E‑7, the MQ‑9 offers much lower operating costs, can loiter for extended periods and poses no risk to crew because it is unmanned. Analysts say the capability could close radar‑coverage gaps and prove especially valuable against suicide drones, cruise missiles and swarm attacks, making it attractive for littoral forces, naval gunfire units and nations without dedicated AWACS aircraft.
