The Franco‑German‑Spanish FCAS program has collapsed, leaving the joint GCAP effort to develop the sixth‑generation Tempest fighter as the only active European project in this field. Britain has confirmed it will continue full funding despite earlier budget concerns. Italy’s share is valued at about €18.6 billion, with the UK and Japan expected to contribute similar amounts.
Leonardo said that if the schedule stays on track, German defence firms could join the GCAP programme. Poland and Canada have also previously expressed interest in participating. Under the current plan, the Tempest is slated to enter service by 2035, replacing part of the Eurofighter fleet of member states.
